MEET THE CANDIDATE

I’m Randy Leatherman, a lifelong resident of Washington County, MD. I grew up in historic Sharpsburg, MD, and am proud to be a descendant of our county’s C&O canal boaters, farmers, and historians. My youth was spent exploring the town and waterways, including Antietam Battlefield, where I volunteered and gained a deep appreciation for our area’s rich history.

MILITARY SERVICE

After graduating from Boonsboro High School in 1979, I felt a strong call to serve my country and enlisted in the United States Air Force. For two decades, I was honored to serve with the WVANG 167th Tactical Airlift Group in Martinsburg, WV, where I dedicated myself to supporting our nation and our mission.

PUBLIC SERVICE

Following my graduation from Shepherd College in 1982, I began my career as an apparatus operator with the Hagerstown Fire Department. This experience laid the foundation for my subsequent 28-year career as a firefighter with the Fairfax County Virginia Fire Department. â€‹

During my tenure, I had the privilege of serving on Virginia Task Force One. My assignments included rescue missions in Kenya, Turkey, and Taiwan, each providing invaluable experience and opportunities to help those in need. However, the event that is forever burned in my memory is participating in the search and rescue operation at the Pentagon on 9/11.

FAMILY

My wife and I have been married for nearly 40 years, and together we have witnessed the growth and development of Washington County. We live on a small farm in Fairplay, MD, where we raised our two sons and are now proud grandparents to two grandchildren.

Outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, hunting, and flying are among my favorite ways to enjoy the natural beauty of our region. I’ll always be proud to call Washington County, MD my home.
